During boot camp, soldiers beat him and his officers tried to court-martial him because he refused to carry a rifle into combat. His name was Desmond Doss. In May 1945, his battalion reached Hacksaw Ridge on Okinawa—a 400-foot sheer cliff of fire and artillery. When the Americans were ambushed and ordered to retreat, Doss stayed behind alone. Unarmed, without a weapon or helmet, he dragged 75 wounded men through smoke and sniper fire, lowering them down the cliff by rope. His only prayer between each rescue: "Lord, please help me get just one more." He became the first conscientious objector in American history to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.
